Yankees Sweep Mets, Wang Gets First Win

Yankees Sweep Mets, Wang Gets First Win

What
a great weekend for Yankee fans!!! Not only have we won 5 games in a
row…butttttttt we swept the Mets!! HAHAHAHAH!!! What a great
feeling…after all the Mets are the Yankees biggest rivals (some guy was
actually arguing that point outside of a game once…and finished it off
by saying “who cares about the Red Sox”….and I have all reason to
believe he was being serious). What a great confidence boost this
series was for the Yankees…actually what this whole 5 game winning
streak has meant to them is a HUGE confidence boost and puts them back
in the “elite team” class. The Yanks are now only 3 games out from the
Saux but both teams have pretty easy opponents…Boston is facing the O’s
in Baltimore and the Yanks have Seattle in Yankee Stadium….That means
Griffey is coming to town…and that means we might see a homer or two
from him…very interesting….but back to last night…I’ll get to that
series breakdown tomorrow…The Yanks proved
to be too powerful for the depleted Mutts and truly showed their muscle
this past weekend…The Mets really had no chance to win…their team is
wayyyy to weak right now and the Yanks are just on too much of a
role…It means something that Wang finally got his first win…the Mets
looked really bad…and the one player that needed to come through, David
Wrong, didn’t at all this series and the rest of the team fell apart
around him. Side Track: It was brought to my attention, and I have
noticed in the past, that I use to word catalyst way to much…I am going
on a CATALYST ban for this entire week…and if I use it at all I will
give a dollar to everyone who calls me out on it (I doubt I will need
this but the limit is the first 50)…well back to it…I really wanna give
it up to Wang…and I really can’t say anything about the Yankee bats…but
they weren’t that good last night at all…and if it wasn’t for a few
defensive miscues by the Mets..the Yanks may have never scored…but back
to Wang…He pitched great last night…even in tight situations he still
pitched to his power and didn’t get flustered like we have seen earlier
this year…he kept the ball up a little too much but he is getting back
to full power and is becoming a permanent fixture in the rotation once
again…I, for one, am very excited by this and feel that he is the last
key component to making this rotation unbelievable…if Wang can get back
to full strength, hopefully by the all-star break, he can be dominate
once again and he is even starting to show signs that he is crawling
back into that 19-game winner mold of years past…I am very very very
impressed with his pitching lately and am happy to see him back
performing the way he should…WELCOME BACK CMW!!!!

The Yanks did win an impressive game last night…but if it was not
for a few defensive mistakes…Livan Hernandez might have had a shutout
last night. The impressive part, on his behalf, is that he put 8 people
on base last night and only 3 crossed the plate off him…he pitched well
and got the outs he needed…but the M.O. of the Mutts continue and they
can’t score when their pitchers show up…GOOD FOR US!!! hahahahahaha…I
hate to be a bummer…but Cano (my fav player btw) looked HORRIBLE last
night…3 double plays??? Cano you’re soooo much better than that….but I
guess everyone has their bad days….please shake that performance off…we
need to stay with the Saux during this series against the Mariners….but
the good news is that Arod is still hottttt and it doesn’t seem as if
he will cool down…you can’t get a ball past him without him battling it
off…and he is walking at a very high rate…he had 3 last night!!! This
is a good sign…and every day we see how important he is to this team
and them winning!!! I’M SOOOO PROUD!!! I am extremely elated in the
Yankees performance this weekend…everything worked…their pitching,
hitting, fielding…nothing failed…they played incredibly this
weekend….YES!!!!!!!!!!!

Let’s really give it up for the bullpen though…these guys are
getting better and better as each game goes by…and Phil Hughes is
showing how amazing he really is…I think non-Yankee fans have to admit
how impressive this kid really is…..over the past 5 games (7.1 innings)
he hasn’t let up a run and over the last 4.1 hasn’t even given up a
HIT!!!! He has let one guy on over those innings and it was last
night…on a walk! This kid is incredible!!!! But the real story has to
go to Mo…I mean that RBI was incredible…who cares about the
milestone…did you see that WALK???? Ohhhh…BTW Mo haters…believe it or
not he wouldn’t walk a closer or pitcher for that matter….sooooo in
turn Mo is better than K-Rod…what was he doing last night…THAT WAS
PATHETIC!!! I ran around my house laughing last night because of how
bad that was HAHAHAHAH!!! I figured it out…when Mo fouled that fastball
off K-Rod thought he couldn’t get it by him so he over threw the
pitch…ummmmm don’t you have a curve ball? Mo would’ve swung right
through it…what a bad choice of pitches…oh well BETTER FOR US!!!! But
really, I want to say congrats to Mo…500 saves is amazing and I am
proud to be a Yankee fan right now because I have witnessed history
through him…what a great feeling it was…Rivera was actually quoted as
saying he was more impressed with his RBI than with his 500th save…he’s
so awesome.

Hopefully the Yanks stay hot against the Mariners…LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

That’s it…I think…late.

Yankees Crush Mets, 9-1

Well now the
Yankees are officially on a roll….with their 3rd win in a row most fans
finally let out that breath they were holding for so long! I, on the
other hand, let out a breath for a completely different reason…I know
most people believed that everything was fine with Sabathia, but I can
be a pessimist from time to time…so  until he put up a performance like
the one he did last night I wasn’t convinced….and not only is his arm
fine for pitching…but he brought his bat with him too!!! What can’t
this guy do?Sabathia did everything that we
expected him to last night…he destroyed the Mets batters and put up a
performance that Yankees fans expect every time he takes the mound. He
went 7 innings, struck out 8 and only gave up 1 run, which came on a
Sheffield homerun…so at least it came off someone that has a reputation
of doing that. Bottom line is that Sabathia is the real deal and now is
the time where he starts to be dominate…and that trend is starting to
show…Middle of the season, when it starts to get warm Sabathia become
almost unhittable….and that is what the Yankees need because right
after the all-star break the Saux usually struggle a little (of course
assuming that trend continues too)….and with the way the Saux are
playing right now the Yanks have to win just to keep their head above
water…OF COURSE THE SEASON ISN’T EVEN HALF WAY THROUGH!!! I have to
calm down lol.

But the real story has to go to the Yankee bats and how they are
absolutely on fire right now!!! And every Yankee fan should be just as
fired up as their bats because this is what we have been missing for
the past couple of weeks…now the weird thing is that Teixeira didn’t
get a hit AGAIN last night! Now….even superstars go through slumps…see
Arod…but that means he is swinging at bad pitches…which means teams are
still attacking Arod..ummm note to opposing pitchers…when Arod hits the
ball out to the opposite field… HE HAS BROKEN THE SLUMP!!! So I am not
worried yet…if Tex goes oh-for tonite then I might start questioning
what he is doing…because that means he isn’t being patient enough.
Butttttt I am very excited to see what Arod is gunna do…we all know
what he is like when he streaks so we should all just sit back and
relax….Three cheers to Gardner though!!! 5 for 6!!! This guys is
proving why he is almost worth of becoming a favorite Yankee for many
fans…he is a scrappy hitter and fielder that has range and speed (some
even say he might be the fastest runner in the AL if not the MLB) and
he just keeps getting better!!! Needless to say he was on fire last
night and also hit a bomb to right field…which is a triumph of its own
in that canyon in Queens. Put everything together and it was just a
great performance all around by a Yankee team that seems primed to go
on a streak…and hopefully everything carries over to tonite.

Well this showdown is clearly in the Yankees favor…Redding vs
Burnett…There is really nothing much to say here…Burnett has the clear
advantage in this matchup and is also building off 5 quality starts in
a row and has been magnificent in the last 2…A.J. might also be a
little bitter because he was out dueled in his last start against the
Marlins….and might feel he has something to prove…We also can’t ignore
the fact that Burnett shut down the Mets in his last start (which was
the 15-0 trumping) so we know he has the ability to shut down this
lineup…and they have also gotten weaker in that time…and became even
more riddled with injuries…Redding, simply put, is just not that great
of a pitcher and the Yanks have to sit back and let him make
mistakes…along with that 1st time seeing a pitcher thing, they seem to
struggle when they face HORRIBLE pitching…but I have faith in them
tonite and they are catching Redding at a perfect time…The Yankee bats
are on fire…Burnett has been great of late…so I can’t see the Yanks
dropping this one…LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

Other Notes:

Andre Either: 3 homeruns last night…3!!!….and he was on my bench.

That’s it…late

Bats Power Yanks to Victory

HOLLER!!!!!!! The Yankees have once again taken a series and
everything…at least it seems…is right again with the Bronx
Bombers…everything has been going so good over the past 2 games that
even Arod decided to join the party! Hey Yankee fans, if you were
wondering how much of an impact Arod’s hitting has on the Yankees you
just have to look at the two past series, against Washington and
Florida, and then compare them to the two games they won against
Atlanta (Check last nights box-score here)…A
DIRECT CORRELATION! When Arod hits…he fuels the rest of the team and
therefore gets them more pitches to hit and then they score more
runs…and with last night as an example this team has the ability to win
when their pitching doesn’t show up…Pettitte was not impressive out of
the gate…even with a two run lead…and thankfully the Yankee bats were
there to back him up and beat up on a very good starter in Derek Lowe.
Two things can be a factor to what sparked this sudden burst of
offense…Joe Girardi getting tossed out or Cervelli’s first MLB homerun.
I would like to think it was Girardi but I might have to go with
Cervelli’s homer…here’s why…The Yankees were
at their best when they were relaxed and having fun with the game…when
they struggle (like any team and I can’t say I blame them) they aren’t
having fun, they try to fix everything at once, and therefore keep
digging themselves into a hole because they are pressing too hard…when
you press or try to hard to fix something you usually make it worse
because you do uncharacteristic things…i.e. Teixeira swinging at
pitches he usually wouldn’t chase…This example is mostly because he
felt the need to have to make up for what Arod was leaving behind…he
wasn’t getting pitches to hit so he was chasing bad pitches to try to
get the offense started…this continued last night as well as Lowe and
other pitchers attacked Arod (and rightfully so) because of his
horrific performance as of late and pitched around Tex and gave him bad
pitches to go after…and he did…going 0 for 5 last night…but if last
night is any indication Arod is back and hopefully starting one of
those HOTTTT streaks like we see from him where he hits .400, 10
homers, and 30 RBIs in a month…OR BETTER!!! If that is the case get
ready to see Teixeira’s numbers go wayyyyyy up…you can see Arod’s
impact on the top of the order as well…with Jeter going 4 for 5
yesterday…and getting a hit the night before…Side Track: Have you
noticed how many bases Jeter has stolen? If not he has 17 for the year
(and has only been caught once)…and one in each of the last 4
games…does he know how to play in the roles he is put in? Any doubters
on Jeter’s ability should just look at his career and how he changes
the game, and how much he understands it…bottom line is that Jeter
shouldn’t be a 2nd or 3rd ballot Hall of Famer…he proves year in and
year out why he should be 1st ballot…back to the top of the order…Damon
also had an impressive night at the plate going 3 for 4 while driving
in 4 ribbies…With Arod back you can imagine how many pitches these guys
are going to get…and if they start to click they can do A LOT of
damage…I’M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!!

I am aware of how off track I just went there and that was a little
crazy…back to my point wayyyyyyy before with Cervelli’s homer 2 nights
ago…It fired this team up…they started to relax again and enjoy the
game like when they were young…it sparked this team and so far they
haven’t looked back…and hopefully this charge keeps them going through
this series with the Mets…tonite’s game isn’t looking too hot though :-(
…Now they can relax…Arod has the monkey off his back…and this team will
be dominate on offense again…I know everyone, me included, acted like
this little skid was the end of the Yankees…but look how quickly that
thought process can turn around…the good news is that they have
momentum going into bailout ballpark and might be the team to expose
the Mets and the farm team they are putting out every night…this series
is HUGE for the Yanks…and I am expecting HUGE things from them…I don’t
really want to touch on Pettitte because that’s a downer…he just was
flat out miserable last night…so let’s chalk that up to a bad
performance…he did only give up 3 earned :-D hahahaha….But the bats are hot, the bullpen is looking GREAT!!! and we are ready for the Mutts.

Before the preview I wanna touch on the bullpen quickly…what a GREAT
performance from these guys last night…Aceves came in for Pettitte in
the 4th and flat out dominated the Braves bats…only putting on 3
batters over the 2 and a third innings that he pitched. My boy Coke
came in and shut them down, only giving up 1 hit while striking out 2
over 2 innings…and even Robertson got in the action…too bad he gave up
a bomb to McCann (he’s really good by the way…REALLLLLLYYYY underrated,
in my opinion) but alls well that ends well…Mo got his second
consecutive save in a row (and he didn’t have to bat this time)…so
things are looking good ALL OVER!!! YES!!!! I’M PUMPED!!!

If this game actually happens tonite we see a pitching matchup that
is really lopsided…for the Mets of course…CC Sabathia against Mike
Pelfrey…my reference earlier was obviously sarcastic…but that gets lost
in writing ;-)
…Tonite (or tomorrow, which may be the case) is a huge test to see is
Sabathia’s arm trouble was just a freak thing or if it is something we
have to be concerned about. I am going with a freak thing…muscles
tighten up all the time and it was a good thing they took him out…the
last thing we need is CC going down for an extended period of time…he
is wayyyyy to important to this team and their success…I am going with
the “he’s fine” route and there is no sign that anything different is
happening. CC has had success in his one and only start against the
mutts…pitching 8 innings of 1 run ball, putting on less than a runner
per inning, and striking out 3 and getting the win…this Mets team is
similar to last years…except for the fact that the lineup is filled
with Triple-A players (no matter how well they are playing) so Sabathia
should have a fun time on the mound, especially with how big this place
plays. Pelfrey is a kid with a lot of potential but struggles with his
command…in 1 start against the Yankees he is 1 and 0 with a 7+ ERA, he
obviously has struggled against this team buttttttttttttttttt…this is a
new year…..but with the way the Yanks are batting right now…I don’t
know if I would be so eager to pitch against them…I think the Yanks
take this one with power and a great pitching performance…could
potentially be a problem if they are only thinking long ball…but
Pelfrey will be afraid of Arod and Tex so expect Jeter and Damon to get
a lot of hittable balls…Sabathia can attack this whole Mets lineup with
out a worry…LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

Ummmmmm….Might be back later I feel like I am forgetting something….late!

Yanks Lose 3rd Straight, 5 Games Back

Well there is
really only one word to describe the way the Yankees have played as of
late…and that is PATHETIC!!! This is the 3rd series in a row where they
are facing a team they have a distinct advantage over and now they drop
the first and most crucial game of this series. The worst part about
it? Wang looked good again!!! And this guy can’t buy a win…or even a no
decision! He pitched well his last two starts and the Yankee bats are
turning into the Mets when Santana is on the hill…except right now you
can’t hope to score 1 run…I KNOW THE YANKEES GOT SHUT OUT!…and win the
game with Wang on the hill…where is the offense? Hanson pitched okay
last night…but he didn’t have shut out stuff…calling all Yankee
hitters…when you get 10 guys on base off of a starter…especially a
rookie!!! YOU HAVE TO SCORE!!!! What are you guys doing???This
team just isn’t clicking right now…and the bad part is they have to
face ANOTHER pitcher they have never seen before again tonite!! And we
all know how that has been going! Side Track: I have made excuses for
him for a while now…but when will Arod turn it around? He is almost
turning into an automatic out and with him batting like this it is
almost causing the whole team to fail…there is no reason to not go
right at Arod right now…I don’t know if he isn’t trusting himself or he
is favoring his injury too much…but he has wayyyy to good to be batting
so close to the Mendoza line…he needs to turn it around so the offense
can start clicking again and firing on all cylinders…c’mon Arod…just
relax and do what you do best…stop trying so hard!…This team was on
fire…i feel like i say this all the time…when they were having fun and
relaxing…they won coming from behind…they blew teams out of the
water…but now they are flat…where is that energy?…where are those
smiles? I feel like these guys are just not having fun right now…which,
in my opinion, is the reason why they were playing so bad these past
few years. Swisher, Cano, Melky all need to fire this team up again and
get them loose…when these guys are on they are jumping around, joking
and having a good time…guys it’s still early in the season…stop
pressing so much and have fun!!! The hits will fall in and we will
start winning games again…PLEASE!!! for all Yankee fans sake start
enjoying the game again!!! Bottom line is two things can’t click right
now for the Yankees…they get good pitching…no hitting…they get good
hitting…no pitching…maybe this is just a little skid…maybe this isn’t
there year for interleague dominance…but either way they need to get
back on track…Tex is still hitting good, but if Arod can click this 3-4
combo will be unstoppable again…and the top of their order will be
incredible…Joe, please put Cano at #2 for at least 1 game…you will see
more offensive production this way…THANKS!

I do have to make a “silver lining” statement about Phil Hughes…this
kid has looked amazing coming out of the pen…and I think he has learned
what he needs to do to be a successful starter in the majors. In his
last 6 innings he hasn’t given up even a run (earned or unearned)…he
has pitched unbelievably well and taken his new role in stride and is
doing whatever it takes to help the team win. He is proving that you
can put him in any situation, any role and he will be dominate, and
adjust to it…in his last 2 appearances (3 innings) Hughes hasn’t even
given up a hit or a walk…and has struck out 4 batters…this kid is the
real deal and proving every time he comes into a game how much of an
asset he is to this team…I wouldn’t be surprised…if everything
continues the same way…to see Hughes back in the rotation if Joba can’t
get it together. There are a lot of sportscasters and sports talk radio
hosts pounding home the idea that Joba should be the 8th inning guy, I
was resilient to that point but now am thinking it might be the best
thing…I love Joba as a starter but he can’t get it together and you
can’t put the bullpen in the position of having to pitch 4 innings
every game he starts…I can’t believe I am actually saying this but I am
starting to agree Joba should be in the bullpen…If Phil continues to be
dominate and Joba continues to only pitch 5 innings there can be a
switch happening by the all-star break.

What about tonite’s game? Well this should be a head scratcher that
can really go either way…Joba vs Kawakami…another pitcher the Yankees
have never seen.. it’s the 8th game in a row this is
happening…GREAT!!!…This is another pitcher that gets knocked around a
little…but knows how to work out of trouble…he has an ERA just over 4
so that also means he gives up runs…in his last 2 starts however he has
only given up 4 earned runs over 11 innings pitched…with him shutting
down a very formidable Saux lineup…I haven’t seen much of this guy
pitch…but he has a similar delivery to Dice-K, for better or worse, so
he slows down the game and can deceive batters…NOT GOOD for the
Yankees!! These two things, deceptive delivery and seeing him for the
first time, combined spells a disaster waiting to happen…and this means
Joba needs to show up tonite!!! Joba, Joba, Joba…its sad somewhat
because he really doesn’t give up many runs…but he doesn’t trust his
stuff and gets into wayy to many jams…and it might actually be coming
around to hurt him finally…he has been sluggish and trying wayyyyyyyyyy
to hard to hit his spots…to the point where his 95 mph fastball is
turning into a 90 mph meatball in the middle of the plate…Joba has some
of the nastiest stuff in the game but doesn’t use it correctly…if he
can settle down and pitch his game he will be fine…but once runners get
on he tries to become too cute and too accurate…JOBA y0u can throw 95+
at any time…run the ball inside and scare some of these batters and
then have them diving over the plate for the slider…Joba needs to go 6+
tonite…and if he doesn’t the rumblings are gunna become screams for him
to be put in the bullpen…if he wants to keep being a starter he needs
to start pitching that way…very tough opponent tonite, and a very
interesting matchup that can go either way…hopefully it goes ours…LET’S
GO YANKEES!

Yanks Hand Mets, Santana a 13-0 Beating

Well now that I am officially back from my trip to A/C I can make my triumphant long awaited return to my blog…don’t act like you didn’t miss me…and boyyyyy howdy do I have a lot to talk about…Just a heads up there is no game tomorrow so I am saving my preview of he first game in the Nationals series for tomorrow. Wow, what a weekend! Not just for me but the Yankees and Mets as well…A whole lot of ups and downs but WHO CARES the Yankees take the series 2 to 1 and after a quick nap yesterday (only scoring two runs off of who? oh right Nieve) the Yankee bats were alive and ON FIRE!!! Scoring 15….yeah that’s right 1-5…15 runs today!! I’m gunna get back to today’s extremely impressive performance in a few but…I of course have to talk about Friday and Yesterday’s game…of course no one cares about either BUT I DO!!! So I am just gunna go over a few quick notes about each game…really brief I promise.

Friday:

What a great game…well it had to be b/c I had tickets to it but couldn’t go (inside joke)…The Yankee bats did what they had to do…they attacked Livan Hernandez and took him for 6 earned over 5.1 innings pitched. Too bad Joba, who gave up 2 earned by way of a bases loaded HBP and Walk) couldn’t hold up his end of the bargain and only pitched for 4 innings (throwing 100 pitches by that time…not good) Brett Tomko blew up giving up 4 earned over 2/3 of a inning and leaving the Yankees in a 6 to 3 hole after the top of the 5th. The Yankees took the lead 7 – 6 in the bottom of the 6th by way of a 3 run Matsui bomb and that’s where the real fun started. The Mets seemed to be on a role…Side Track: Wow, in the middle of a sentence….anywho the game was no where to be found in atlantic city so I am piecing this together off of recollection of my oft-praised MLB.com App on my Iphone…and they took back the lead in the top of the 8th on a David Wright double…Oh wait…this is where the fun begins!!! After a one out single by Jeter, he steals 2nd when Damon strikes out, followed by an IBB to Teixeira, Arod comes up to bat and pops up a fastball right down the middle and Castillo makes the out to win the game….OHHHHH NOOOOO!!!! That was supposed to happen but didn’t…Castillo tracked the ball wrong and it ended up hitting the heel of his glove and dropping to the ground…ummmm what do you call that a walk off error? That was too good!!!!

Saturday:

Real real short…I hate praising the Mets…this guy (I called him a kid the other day and was clearly wrong) Nieve pitched a great game and showed the Yankees of years past…They usually have a history of not being able to hit horrible pitchers…but w/e….Mets clearly out played the Yankees in this one and exploited Pettitte and his continuing woes at home…I don’t know what is wrong with him…it’s really scaring me but it doesn’t seem to matter to anyone else…including the Yankee announcers….In my opinion they need to do something with Pettitte….Have him pitch batting practice or something along those lines to see what he can get away with at home…because he is clearly not pitching to his potential when the Yankees are in the Bronx…I just checked his YTD (year to date) stats for this year at home and he has only had 2 starts where he has given up less than 3 runs….Something needs to be done or it can be a LONGGGG season for Pettitte at home.

Today :-) :

One of those rare “PERFECT” days for the Yankees today…I think everyone and their brother…including me…figured the Yankees would have had a hard time against Santana today…but WOW were we wrong…the Yanks took 9 earned off of Santana before knocking him out in the 4th before he got an out…The Yankees woke up today and scored 4 runs in the second inning then were at full steam in the 4th when they knocked in 9, yes 9 runs!!! What a great day to be a Yankee fan but an even better day to be a Yankee batter…it must’ve seemed like batting practice to them….Side Track: I wonder how the Mets fans are gunna take this two game skid from Santana…I can only imagine the sports talk shows tomorrow…but they might have a point this is the only time in Santana’s career when he has given up 9 earned…by the way that’s 14 earned over his past two starts…it happens Mets fans don’t go crazy and kill yourselves it’s one game…too bad Philly won today too LOL…I want to go over the bats first…with a brief synopsis b/c dinner is almost here but I will hit on Burnett very soon…There is really no complaints from me about the Yankee bats AT ALL…I am a little concerned about Arod though…he is not getting into the swing
of things…and it’s gunna kill me to say this butttt Susan Waldman (ewwwwww) actually said something worth while and made a great point that we kind of have to be patient with Arod…he is coming off major surgery and probably doesn’t trust his hip yet…but we shouldn’t fret on that what a great hitter performance overall…7 of the 9 starting hitters got a hit in this game with 5 of them having multi-hit games..and Jeter going 4 for 4…what a great day..I am very happy…and more importantly Damon got his swing back and this game will hopefully completely snap him out of his slump. Oh by the way Matsui hit another one and if he stays healthy that just makes our line up even more dangerous….sorry for being brief…

Player of the game has to be Burnett in my mind…he not only set the pace by getting out of a no out bases loaded situation without giving up a run but struck out 2 of those batters….he flat out dominated the Mets hitters today and showed the Yankees why they went out and got him….He has been teasing the media by saying once he is “on” he is never gunna stop…let’s hope this game is a sign of the future with him on this team….Burnett pitched a great game and hopefully now he can calm down…this just might be his “Yankee Moment”….although not the biggest rival of the Yankees this matchup always stirs up emotions and is a HUGE deal to the Yankee fans…ALWAYS…so hopefully if he was feeling the pressure of pitching against Boston as a Yankee this game will be a huge step in the right direction for him. Again Burnett showed his real stuff today and how dominate he can be, yes the Mets are dinged up but they still have great bats in the lineup…he worked out of tight situations and kept his composure the whole way through…The Yankees were fired up today and the swagger was back…let’s keep the Mojo working boys…don’t lose that desire and become flat again, like you did in Boston PLEASE!!!! Interesting series coming up starting Tuesday…will be back tomorrow to preview it…LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

Yankees VS. Mets from Two Different Perspectives

First I would like to thank my good friend (and cousin) Richie, of Forth Quarter Punts, for his input and his perspective of this series from a Mets fan point of view. And awayyyy we go:

Well I don’t really have to set up this matchup because my good friend Richie, from Forth Quarter Punts, did it in the Mets P.O.V entry that I submitted earlier. But what the heck here we go…

The Yanks and Mets are both coming off horrible performances against
their biggest rivals in their respective divisons and are both looking
to bounce back against their cross-town/city rivals. This series is
traditionally just for bragging rights but it seems that this year, at
least this series, it means a lot more. They
are both caught in tight division races (even though it is early in the
season) and both need this series to keep afloat and within an arms
reach of the Saux and the Phillies. Needless to say each team will be
rooting for each others rival during this series as well. Okay, enough
about that let’s get into this matchup.

As Richie stated in his post, the Mets are chomping at the bit to
get to this stadium and out of the black hole they call Citi Field. The
Mets power numbers have been down this year and they would love to get
their swagger back in the bandbox in the Bronx. Both teams are going to
be fired up going into this series and they know how important it is,
not only for their fans but for the psyche as well. The most intriguing
pitching matchup of this series will be featured tonite with Joba vs Hernandez.
Hernandez might possibly be the Comeback Player of the Year and a key
element to the Mets success this year, especially with Maine now being
on the DL. Joba is the swingman for the Yankees, he has been pitching
very well over his past 6 starts and hopes to continue the trend
tonite, and he needs to perform at his best for the rest of the year. I
think the Yankees have the advantage in this matchup…Joba has great
stuff and can strike out these Mets batters, the only concern I have is
that the Mets have very strong fastball hitter and with Sheffield, more
than likely, being in the lineup as DH that makes the Mets even more
dangerous. Livan has not had success against the Yankees in the past,
6.37 ERA with a 1.89 WHIP, and this lineup is more potent than in years
past…in my opinion advantage Joba…Mets haven’t seen him as a starter
and the Yanks can, given the track record, give Joba a lead and let him
calm down, relax and pitch his game.

Tomorrow’s game is definitely advantage Yankees. Pettitte will be
squaring off against some kid from AAA that will probably be shaking in
the knees while standing on the mound. No reason to go into depth about
this…all that needs to be said is that the Yankees must take advantage
of early strikes and mistakes and if they can they will be golden…the
only thing that concerns me is that the Yankees struggle against young
pitchers in the past…but this year they seem to handle them pretty
well. Pettitte has not pitched well at all at home, which is scary, and
David Wright is probably licking his lips with the way this ball
travels to both sides of the field. As long as Pettitte can keep the
ball down and not float that curve over he will be fine and the Yanks
should roll to victory.

Well this is the matchup we will all be waiting for…Santana vs.
Burnett…this matchup scares me and both pitchers are coming off of
lackluster starts. Santana will most likely bounce back and we all know
what he is capable of…Burnett is another story and needs to start
showing his worth. Both pitchers can be dominate, you expect that from
Santana and hope for that from Burnett (at least for this year), so I
don’t think there will be a lot of offense in this game. If Burnett
struggles you can easily see a 5 earned type of game from him, and if
that was to happen you can say goodbye to the Yankees chances of
winning. Unfortunately Santana is the best pitcher in the game and that
gives the advantage to the Mets in this matchup. The Yanks do have a
glimmer of hope in that Santana has been worse on the road this year
than at his cushy home of Citi Field but of course not much worse. If
anyone gets into trouble in the new Yankee Stadium balls can fly out of
there…so it will be interesting to watch…especially since both pitchers
haven’t pitched particularly well against either team in their tenure
in the big leagues.

Key to the series: How the ballpark plays…this park makes mistakes
homeruns…so it should be interesting to watch considering both teams
have a good amount of power.

Series breakdown: Yanks 2-1…I think Santana will outlast Burnett…but I am looking for a good game out of A.J.

REMEMBER: Please comment we like to discuss this… you can bash us too we don’t mind…it’s all in good fun.

Thanks again to my good friend, and Cousin, Richie from Forth Quarter Punts for his insight into this series…LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

I am going to start with his view first (sorry for the formatting):

Ahhh, it must be spring.  The first round of the annual grudge match
for city bragging rights between the Mets and Yankees begins tonight
at Yankee Stadium.  There’s no need to set this series up, both teams
are coming off a horrific series against division rivals, and need to
win this series to keep pace in their respective division races.  It
may be the “Subway Series”, but this is for more than bragging rights.
The Yankees need to keep pace with the Red Sox and the Mets need to
just keep afloat until the reinforcements come back from the DL.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that when you break down these teams
by position the Yankees have a huge advantage, but this series being
played in Yankee Stadium actually sets up well for the Mets.  Normally
when an NL team plays in an AL park the AL team has a distinct
advantage.  The NL team is usually forced to designate a back-up
position player as DH, while the AL team usually has a specific hired
gun to DH.  But the Mets have some pretty good bats on the bench and
can play around with pitching match-ups accordingly.  It also allows
them to DH Gary Sheffield which improves OF defense and gives him a
break over the long run.  Having the DH allows Jerry Manuel to use
Jeremy Reed in LF for defense (although I think they’ll start out with
Ryan Church there) or get Murphy’s bat in the line-up in RF (keeping
Tatis at 1st).

Offensively the Mets bats are salivating at the thought of getting out
of the cavernous Citi Field and into the Yankee Stadium bandbox, but I
still think they’ll need to play NL small ball to drive the offense.
They’ll have to pick and choose their spots though.  A double in Citi
is a HR in Yankee and you don’t want to jeopardize a potential run by
making foolish decisions on the bases.

I like the pitching match-ups in 2 out of the 3 games.  The Game 1
match-up of Livan Hernandez vs. Joba might be the most interesting of
the series.  Livan has pitched lights out in his last four starts.
He’s gone deep into games (even a CG, not bad for a 60 year old) and
is 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA.  Of course he usually pitches horrible against
the Yanks and Jeter and Aroid traditionally hit him as well as they do
a batting practice pitcher.  But if he forces ground balls I think
he’ll be alright (or at least I hope he’ll be alright).  Joba is hit
or miss.  The key for the Mets will be patience.  Drive up his pitch
count, force some walks, steal some bases, and get him flustered.  If
they force the Yankees to the bullpen early they should put up some
runs.  In Game 2 some guy from AAA Buffalo is going against Pettitte.
Pettitte hasn’t pitched all that well this year, but he is at least a
major leaguer.  He also pitches well against the Mets.  This one could
get ugly for the Mets.  They need to get on Pettitte early and give
this Nieve kid some support if they want to have any chance.  Game 3
is the big name, big money match-up of the series, Santana vs.
Burnett.  Both pitchers are coming off shaky outings in their last
starts, but Santana is the more consistent pitcher and even though the
Yanks big bats have a pretty good history against him I think he’ll
step up here.  The Mets bullpen, believe it or not, has been one of
the best in the league (2nd in ERA behind Boston) and is a clear
advantage for the Mets.  While I’m not that confident to call it a
difference maker in this series it should help pull out a win in this
series, most likely Game 1.

As I said at the top the Mets are nursing a lot of regulars on the DL
(8 to be exact), but have been competitive against the better teams in
the league in this stretch (they are, after all, the only NY team to
beat the Red Sox this year).  If anything they’ve proven to be a
resilient bunch and it will carry over into this series.

The Pick: The Mets win the series 2-1, riding Livan and Santana in
games 1 and 3.

Another Bad Start for Wang

Even though I
hate to admit it, it seems like maybe the Yankees experiment with Wang
is coming to an end, and he has one more start to prove he should be in
the rotation. The start will come against the Nationals and it will
have huge implications upon where he will spend the rest of the year.
In my opinion, he should be sent to the minors to work out the kinks
and make all the necessary starts, unlike being rushed back this time
in fear that Joba was hurt for an extended period of time. This means
Hughes is back into the rotation again, figuring in that Wang wouldn’t
perform, he has pitched well coming out of the pen and showed again he
is a HUGE asset…he also performed and proved to be very effective last
night when he relieved Wang in the 3rd. Hughes had one blemish, an
opposite field homerun to Youkilis on a pitch that might have been a
little high but wasn’t that bad and was more impressive hitting than it
was bad pitching.Back to Wang…it is really
sad to see what this guy is going through, our ace for the past 3 years
is now the laughing stock of all Major League Baseball…over the first 5
starts of the season he has the highest ERA in HISTORY!!! This guy won
54 games in his first 4 seasons, he was the most consistent Yankee
pitcher for years and was usually the stop gap if the Yanks were on a
slide for an extended period of time…I’m really hoping this guy can
come back because it is truly sad to see someone so talented perform so
poorly. My true feeling is that Wang should go to the minors…and
everything else I said earlier…and then get put as long relief in the
bullpen for the rest of the year, unless an injury or struggles occur,
and start over from spring training next season…Maybe some winter ball
to get his confidence back…he is far too good and talented to just give
up on him…I have faith that he will return to be a great asset to this
team but we almost have to give up on him being a starter this
year…Side Track: Now wait a minute…it is only what? 60 games into the
season? I know I am being rash and possibly overreacting…but isn’t that
what being a Yankee fan is all about?…Just Kidding…but for real
everyone growing up in New York expects perfection 100% of the time…it
doesn’t happen like that…we are killing Wang and the Yankee front
office for putting him out there…but don’t forget he was the ACE of
this staff for 3 years, they don’t owe it to him but they should show
confidence in him…so before we kill them…it’s still early in the
season…if this happens down the stretch we take the protest to the
streets…but the season is only 1/3 over let’s not get too hasty…I KNOW
A LITTLE HYPOCRITICAL…but it’s the truth.

Hmmmmmmmmm….tough to find a bright spot in last nights game…..but
you almost have to say the bats and bullpen were what kept us in
it…before I praise the bats I have to bash them a little bit though.
Not that it’s a BIG number but still not good…the Yankee batters
stranded 6 runners in scoring position last night…that’s 6 potential
runs with 5 of those runs not getting in with 1 out or less in the
inning…my small ball rant from the other day fits perfectly here…that’s
just not acceptable especially against a guy like Wakefield…I
understand the game and I know how hard it is to hit a Knuckleballer,
especially when he is on his game, BUT 6 runners left in scoring
position with 5 of them with 1 out or less? that’s INSANE!!!
UNEXPLAINABLE!!! UNACCEPTABLE!!! C’mon guys this is Wakefield not
Beckett! I am so dejected and upset by this that I decided to outline
each inning they left runners on:

1st: Tex single, Arod Walk, Cano pop out to 3rd = 1 risp

2nd: Posada Homerun…Matsui Double, Swisher bunt to pitcher – Mastsui
to Third, Melky lines into double play (tough to swallow but you can’t
really get mad about that one), Jeter pop out to catcher = 1 risp

3rd: Tex Double, Arod and Cano fly out to center = 1 risp

see a trend yet? By the way Wakefield is still in and at this point it is 3 to 1 turns 4 to 1 after bottom of inning

4th: Matsui singles, Swisher walks, MELKY DRIVES IN MATSUI!!!!
YAY!!! (so after stranding 3 we finally come through) Swisher to
second, Jeter and Damon both fly out to….THE CATCHER!!! At least get
the ball on the field boys! = 1 Risp

5th: NONE!!  WOW!!!! Cano grounds out to 3rd to drive in Tex

Wakefield still in…6-3 Red Sox

6th: NONE!!! – Matsui did single in inning…rest of hitters down in order

7th: NONE!!! – Wakefield out..YAY!!! Back to back homers by Damon and Tex

6-5 Red Sox

8th: Swisher single, pinch runner Gardner comes in, Melky Sacrifies
him to 2nd then back to back Strikeouts by Jeter and Damon…PUT THE BALL
IN PLAY!!!! = 1 risp

9th: Rodriguez draws walk, pinch runner Pena comes in, Pena steals second, Cano strikes out, Posada fly out = 1 risp

That’s all 6 runners in scoring position…pretty bad Yankees,
pretty bad. SOOO Bad that I’m writing right now in bold to make a
stronger point…I know I’m pathetic thank you…two pop outs to the
catcher and back to back strike outs???? That’s horrible and
unacceptable guys, come on!!! The bullpen gave you a chance…you did
fight back…but we had sooo many opportunities to tie/win the game it’s
nauseating.

Well sorry for that, but I was frustrated by the shear lack of
effort last night and the flat, lackluster performance. There were two
bright spots in last night’s game Teixeira went 4 for 5, with his one
out coming off Papelbon, and Matsui going 2 for 3 and breaking out of a
horrible slump and hopefully this will be the catalyst to him turning
his season around. Three other decent bright spots were the Homeruns by
Posada, Tex and Damon, all put a charge back into the game and made it
interesting but unfortunately the team couldn’t pull it out in the end.
On to the bullpen…what a great performance by these guys last
night…Wang left the game giving up 4 runs and Hughes gave up 2 but that
was in the first 4 innings and the rest of the night the potent Saux
offense was shut down and dominated. Red Sox batters only got 6 guys on
by way of walk and hit and were struck out 5 times…all by Hughes…this
Yankee bullpen is showing up big and responding to the call…My main
concern is that they are being used too much right now…With Sabathia on
the hill tonite they should get a rest…but if they get worn out by the
end of the year it is very, very worrisome…our starters neeeeed to go
longer!

Tonite!!!! Sabathia vs Penny…the Marquee Matchup…the creme de la
creme of pitching excellence…oh wait…Penny not Peavy…sorry…ummmm not
much to say here if Sabathia keeps pitching the way he has…and gets
over his performance against the Rays the advantage is definitely on
the Yankees side. Sabathia has handled the Sox well over his tenure as
an MLB pitcher, despite his losing record at 2-4, but his ERA is a
respectable 3.91 over 7 starts. The Yankees NEED this game to prevent
falling 2 games behind in the East and still staying ahead of a hot
Blue Jays team, remember they fell apart a few weeks ago…well their
back! and playing very well (but how long will that last?). Yankees
will be fired up…Sabathia knows how big this game is for the Yankees
psyche going into this weekend against the Mets. This is a must win for
the Yanks and I think they should win easily with Penny on the
mound…perfect matchup for the struggling Yankees and it couldn’t come
at a better time…LET’S GO YANKEES!

Other Notes:
Mets: You thought the Yankees stranding 6 RISP is bad? How bout them
Mets leaving 16!!! that’s right 16 runners left on base last
night…direct reason for their loss..DON’T BLAME PARNELL!

Verlander: He’s back…simple as pie…performing at his best…he can’t
be touched and has his confidence back…dare I say Cy Young contender?

Lakers/Magic/Kobe: This is a MUST WIN for the Magic…if they don’t
put up an effort tonite they are done and there is no way they can win
in LA they must even the series…Kobe was offended that he was asked if
he was tired and responded in a weird way to me…the right way, but
weird in my opinion, WE KNOW YOUR TOUGH KOBE, DON’T WORRY!

That’s it…Late!

p.s.: Look for a joint blog entry previewing this weekend’s BIG
MATCHUP in the eyes of a Yankee fan (River Ave Rant) and a Met Fan (4th
Quarter Punts)

Damon’s Homer Lifts Yankees Over Rays

Damon’s Homer Lifts Yankees Over Rays

Another
great late inning win by the Yankees, just proving, once again, that no
matter who the opponent, what the score, who’s pitching, etc. the Yanks
always have a chance and are always in the game. I would like to start
off congratulating Andy Pettitte on pitching a great game at
home…FINALLY!!! I mean, I know I’m being a little over dramatic…over
his last 3 home starts (not including yesterday) he only gave up 4
earned but he didnt look good. Last night Pettitte was there to pitch
and displayed one of the NASTIEST sliders I have even seen him throw.
Now I have to admit I am a little concerned about Pettitte…he seems to
not be at his healthiest and is not dominating batters the way he has
in the past….STOP!!! I know what your thinking…”HEY DUMMY!!! HE’S NOT
27 ANYMORE!!!” I know, I know…I just mean he is throwing meatballs at
points and not using his smarts to get past batters. That 3-2 pitch to
Kapler…SIDE TRACK: I truly believe that Pettitte was ********** that he
didn’t get the call on the pitch before…he threw a 2-2 curvethat,
I REALLLLLY THOUGHT WAS A STRIKE, must’ve just missed the outside
corner…he froze Kapler and should’ve gotten the strike out…instead he
got flustered and made this mistake…was a meatball, batting practice
fastball, that just sat in the middle of the zone and was ready to be
hit into the stratosphere, and that’s where it ended up. He was clearly
upset on the mound and didn’t calm down before he threw that horrific
pitch. But he prevailed and if it wasn’t for the top of the 4th
Pettitte pitched great. My only concern is that Pettitte has given up
WAYYYYY to many homeruns this season so far, especially in Yankee
Stadium….he doesn’t have that 90+ fastball anymore and he needs to
adjust to that…the pitch to Kapler was horrible and with the Rays
lineup he could’ve put the pitch inside and if he ended up walking him
it wouldn’t have been that bad…especially with Reid Brignac coming up
next…but be that as it may in the long run it didn’t matter and the
Yanks still won. (Oh number freaks for Pettitte that’s 8 homers in only
43.1 innings pitched at home…something needs to change here)

Ummmmm….is Teixeira good? Ohhh by the way all those supposed “real
Yankee fans” next time check your stats and don’t overreact to
everything….if you knew anything, you would know Tex is notoriously
horrific in April and that he was going to be off to a slow start…hey
listen I’m not preaching without sin…I got frustrated too…but you can’t
boo the guy when he has that kind of track record!! Look at him now!!
The guy is a flatout beast and is now leading the American League in
Homers and is producing with his bat on a consistent basis and with his
glove, what seems to be, EVERYDAY!!! This guy is one of the best in the
game and I’m glad he’s on our team. Sorry….I had to say that.

I would like to pat myself on the back for predicting a win
yesterday…now I will admit that I thought the Yanks would win by more
than 2 buttttttt that’s baseball and Sonnanstine actually decided to
throw a some what decent game. I also figured Sonnanstine would be out
in 5 (He pitched 7+, he came out for the 8th and gave up a leadoff
homer to Jeter) The bats did attack Sonnanstine though and got him for
4 homers (3 solo) and they rolled to victory thanks to the bullpen
behind Pettitte…and that guy Hughes…ever heard of him? I’ll get back to
that in a minute. Even with the 4 homers off Andy the Yanks could only
muster 6 hits for the night, I obviously figured in for a lot more. A
very weird feat…so in reality Sonnanstine really didn’t pitch that bad
at all…he just made 4 really bad mistakes ;-)
. I would like to see more small ball out of the Yankees at times…we
aren’t stealing bases as much right now…but I guess you have to get on
base to do that too. Power is fine and all but if they lose that for a
period of time…which don’t go crazy people teams do slump…LOOK AT THE
METS!!! who whether you want to admit it or not have a pretty good
lineup…it happens! So with any power shortage the Yankees could be in
trouble so I would like to see small ball once and a while…but I’m not
nervous guys can execute on that team and they will…I just don’t want
to be sooooo dependent on power that we drop a few games if they slump.

This will piss a lot of people off but…Phil Hughes looked really
good and can be the answer to our 8th inning woes. I know he pitched in
the 7th…calm down people…but he looked calm, collected, and very
intense in his new role…and like a good young pitcher he is telling the
media that he will do whatever it takes to help the team win…he’s a
true Yankee. Phil came in and mowed down 3 really good batters,
probably the cream of the crop for this Tampa team and did it with ease
getting 2 groundouts and a very impressive strike out of Longoria. He
looked good people and this might be a good role for him right now…HE
WILL START AGAIN!! DON’T WORRY…but I think he should be our 8th inning
guy…another guy I like actually pitched in the 8th yesterday and that
is Phil Coke…Yes, I am a Coke Bloke as well as a co-founder of the
group…he’s a good pitcher with a lot of talent who is an essential part
of this bullpen…not only as a lefty but as someone who can get key outs
late in the game. He has good pitches and poise and once he gets
settled into being a Yankee and the pressure, he will be fine and will
become a HUGE!!! Fan favorite and everyone will want to become a Coke
Bloke!!! You know it’s true!!!

Tonite’s game…is it raining in Boston? Cuz it’s pouring here! GREAT
MATCHUP BURNETT vs BECKETT, former teammates, good friends….probably
the best one of the series!!! Although it just barely over shadows the
Sabathia/Penny duel…BTW forecast not looking to good for tonite :-(
…BUMMER!!! Hey, remember 4/25 does that date ring a bell? Well that was
the last time these two pitchers squared off and instead of a great
pitchers duel it was a public bashing!!! Both pitchers gave up 8
earned…and didn’t even factor in the decision!!! THAT’S INSANE…worse
part about it was that Burnett was spotted 6 runs before he fell apart
in the 4 giving up 5 earned then again in the 5th giving up another
3!!! HORRIBLE….but hey that’s the past, let’s not dwell on that…you
defiantly can’t expect that two times in a row these guys are too
good…and actually pitching well as of late…especially Beckett who has
had 6 quality starts in a row along with a 4 and 0 record over that
stretch…Burnett is working off 2 good starts off the Rangers (just
happened to face them in back to back starts) and the Red Sox offense
is very similar to theirs…if anything though the Sox hit more for
average than power..which could hurt Burnett…sorry everyone! This
matchup really intrigues me…both guys have the potential to be lights
out but both have the ability to get smashed…my thought process is that
this game is gunna get called tonite…the Weather isn’t supposed to be
good and if it’s anything like it is here up in Boston the game will be
called at 4pm…But if the game were to happen…I can’t give a good
definite prediction…it depends really on which Burnett shows up…I’m
hoping he has found his groove and is ready to pitch to his talent and
we get to see the Burnett of last year…in his career he has dominated
the Sox…which was a speculative point on why the Yanks wanted him so
bad…with a 5-0 career record and posting a 3.52 ERA which I am sure is
bloated a little due to the horrible start mentioned earlier. If
Burnett shows up I think whoever makes the first mistake loses…I really
see this being a pitchers duel…if the Yankees lefties can take
advantage of Pesky’s poll they will be in good shape…the bats are hot
and need to take advantage of Beckett’s few mistakes…Keys to the game
are the Yankees sitting back and waiting for their pitch from a very
good pitcher…if they are too overeager they will be outmatched and put
a lot of pressure on Burnett…I’m looking forward to this game should be
a good one…if it happens…I know it was a vague perdiction but it really
is a toss up…LET’S GO YANKEES!!!

THAT’S ALL FOLKS…late!!!
